Newly elected 4th District Rep. Suzanne Schmidt officially takes office today

Suzanne Schmidt, R-Spokane Valley, took the oath of office as a member of the Washington State House of Representatives on Monday during the opening ceremonies of the 2023 Legislature.

“It is a great honor and privilege to serve the citizens of the 4th Legislative District,”  Schmidt said. “I look forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to maintain and improve the quality of life in our state as we face some big challenges this legislative session.

“We need to focus on reducing the cost of living, improving the safety of our communities, address the housing crisis and make sure small businesses have the tools they need to succeed,” Schmidt continued. “However, it is also important I hear from constituents and their concerns. I am in Olympia to be their voice.”

Schmidt will serve as the assistant ranking Republican on the House Labor and Workplace Standards Committee.

The labor committee considers issues relating to industrial insurance; unemployment compensation; collective bargaining; family leave; safety and health standards; occupational health; and employment standards such as wage laws and employment discrimination.

“This committee fits me well. With my business background I will be able to jump right in with knowledge of the many business, labor, wage and work issues that will come before us,” said Schmidt.

She will also be serving on the Rules Committee, Transportation Committee, and the Postsecondary Education and Workforce Committee.

The 105-day 2023 legislative session begins today and runs through April 23.
